Remarkable People

Sometimes it takes a great tragedy in life to discover a truly remarkable person. Our secretary at work is such a person. I've always admired her quick wit and perspective in life. I love to be around happy people and people that make me laugh. She falls into both categories.

You know when the telephone rings after midnight that it is not good news. When I saw her cell phone number, I automatically assumed her mother had fallen or passed away since she has Alzheimer's. Nothing prepares you for the death of a child. As a parent, you are supposed to die first -- at least that's how we all think it will happen. She found out yesterday evening that is not always the case. Her twenty-two year old son had been found dead. There are simply no words of comfort at a time like this. All I could do was tell her how sorry I was, that I love her and that if she needs anything, just let me know. So, I pray for her to find peace and comfort in a time of unbelieveable sorrow.

When I called to check on her this morning, she actually made a few jokes. She also says that she knows he's in a better place. I only hope that if faced with such a tragedy, I could be half as strong as she has been.
